More on the Moon: VOTE NOW.

Space + Craft = Awesome from Rachel Hobson on Vimeo.

Photos of the embroidery by sweet Jote

Just more than a week ago, I was crushed to find out that my High Texture Hand Embroidery of the Moon had not made the first cut in the NASA/Etsy Space Craft contest. I realized it was an opportunity to remember exactly why I started the project in the first place, and I've truly delighted in sharing the inspiration, information and stitch "education" behind the project over the last week. Thanks so much for your incredibly kind words and thoughtful support.

So I was very stunned to get news today that there was an apparent technical glitch in the way entries were culled from the Etsy listings for that first round of voting. And now, my Moon embroidery is eligible for voting. That's right, folks .... there's still a chance this puppy could fly in space.

I'm still trying to fully understand what happened, and I have to admit, it feels a little weird (I assure you I never contacted Etsy about not making the cut - I was over it, and had just gotten down to enjoying sharing the project here.) but I can't let that keep me from asking you to vote and spread the word.

You'll have to register with Etsy to vote, but it truly takes just a minute or two. Here are some resources for you in case you'd like to easily share the piece with friends to ask them to vote. Blog it, tweet it, Facebook it - whatever. I appreciate your support. The top 20 vote-getters (and this includes those who were voted on before the glitch was discovered) will go back to judges for the final call on the winner.

Wow. Just ... wow.
Now, uhhhh - go vote! And be sure to check out all the folks who are included in this second round, including my pal Jen whose rad needle felted Hubble Telescope was included this time! Hurrah!

  2. So glad you're back in the running! Trying to vote but while I'm logged into Etsy and on the voter page, I don't see how or where to do it. There's still time now, though, so I'll keep trying....

  4. I saw your stitching a few days ago and was incredibly impressed...then today found it over on Craft Gossip, which then led me to your site!!! Being a NASA brat from when I was a kid, I love anything that has to do with space...this piece of yours is now added to those things that I love! Good luck on the contest!!!

  6. What beautiful work and on such an awe-inspiring subject. I'm glad you love the moon; I do, too. :-)

Thank you for sharing the making of this art and for entering it in etsy's contest. I have spent several hours today meandering around the entries and enjoying myself tremendously. I voted for the one that most caught my heart (hint: it was embroidery). And despite a serious lack of available funds, I hope to purchase something from one of the artists I've discovered in my wanderings.

On judging oddities: oddly enough, last week a middle-school robotics competition had its results "corrected" a few days after the event. I feel really bad both for the kids whose winning entries didn't initially count as winners, and for the kids whose initial wins were taken away.

  8. WOW -- This piece is unbelievable. You're not going to sell it, are you? This is a masterpiece. I'm off to Etsy to vote now. Regardless of the outcome, you're a major winner with me!

  9. Hi Rachel, I just voted for your entry as I think it is wonderfully creative and I just love hand embroidery. Saw the link on Mary Corbet's page. Hope you win! Of course it should have been selected in the first place:-) Like waterbaby, I found it difficult to navigate Etsy and cast a vote. Eventually stumbled onto it somehow> Good luck Dianne.

  10. Rachel, you got my vote! I've been in love with the Space program since grade school, when they'd wheel a TV into the room and we'd watch the Gemini and Apollo missions launch to space (that will give you a good idea how old I am!). NASA TV is my computer home site of choice :-)

Your moonscape is awesome; you go, girl!

P.S. A friend of mine sent me Mary Corbet's post, which is how I found you. Good luck!
