Fun Times at the CRAFT/Naughty Secretary Club party

Oh good grief! I just realized that this post has been sitting in my drafts since *last* Saturday night. That's the kind of week it's been. Ah well, better late than never, right?

The CRAFT/Jennifer Perkins party was a total blast. There were loads of great folks - all ages, all styles, and all ready to get crafty. Jen's book did smashingly well, we sold some CRAFT subscriptions (and remember, when you get a CRAFT subscription, you can get a free adult day pass to Maker Faire Austin. That's a crazy good deal - those suckers are $25 a pop!) and we ate pink and aqua cupcakes. It doesn't get much better than that. Jen was a total dream boat, and I was so happy to finally meet her in person after emailing with her for months and months. She's as down home sweet and fun as you would expect.

On to the thank yous and other random bits from the party!

First off, some fantastic volunteers. These gals helped greet folks, hand off raffle tickets, sell subscriptions, and helped guests make the fabric covered button ring projects. I can't thank them enough. They are (l to r) Misty, Jamie, Niku (of Lovely Letterbox fame) and Jennifer (of Textile Fetish - who also donated an adorable apron for the door prizes). Not pictured are also Sarah and Anne Marie.


Next is just a sampling of the cool folks who came to the event. I watched this mother/daughter pair throughout the party, and thought it was so cool to see them there together. I could tell the daughter was just a few years older than my daughter, and she just seemed .... so cool and fun. It made me a little excited for seeing my daughter at that age. She was so cute throughout the party - mingling, talking with Jennifer, making stuff - and when I'd do door prize drawings, she'd sit there, clutching her ticket, dying to win something. Toward the end, I could tell she was about to leave, and when I happened to draw her mom's ticket as a winner, I invited her over to the table to pick something out as well. I couldn't let her go home empty handed.

As I talked with her, I learned that she and her mom are actually from McKinney and live not to far from Jennifer's mom and dad. Avery, who is the ripe age of 11, is a self-proclaimed "devoted fan" of Jennifer Perkins, and they travelled to Austin primarily for this event. She even made the adorable Barbie shoe earrings that her mom is wearing! And she was adorned in all kinds of cool handmade jewlery of her own! (as well as little black Chucks - a girl after my own heart. I'd kill for my daughter to want to wear black Chucks!)

As you can tell, I was quite smitten with them. Avery's mom, D'Wanna, is also crafty and seeing the mother/daughter duo out on a crafty adventure just set my heart all aflutter. I mean, how adorable are these two?

Austin Craft08 Release Party & Book Release Party with Jennifer Perkins of Naughty Secretary Club

I mentioned this in a previous post, and more details will come over the next week and a half, but I am THRILLED to announce that I'll be hosting the Craft08 Release Party in conjunction with the book release party for Jennifer Perkins' The Naughty Secretary Club: The Working Girl's Guide to Handmade Jewelry. We'll be celebrating at Craft-O-Rama on Saturday, August 30 from 3-6 PM, and we'll be making a project from Jen's new book (which is stinkin' FABULOUS. Really. ). We'll have door prizes, loads of special guests and lots of crafty goodness. Please join us! Arts & Drafts at Rio Rita
I haven't been to this yet, but I'm going tonight with a couple of good friends. I've been dying to hook up with a social crafting club in Austin. Heck, I've even wanted to start one, but just haven't had the time or energy. Hoorah for one already in the mix! You can check out their Myspace page for more information - and pictures. I see velvet-y couches. I see folks crafting. I see beer. I'm.so.there.

Don't Shop; Swap!
In case you didn't catch my feature over on Craftzine.com, this is a brilliant event put on by Kathie Sever and Bernadette Noll of the Future Craft Collective. Instead of cramming in to stores this weekend to save a measly $8 for every $100 you spend, do something that's good for your DIY skillz and the environment. It's a back to school clothing swap (complete with sewing machines and volunteers to help you modify clothes if you want to). The event will be this Saturday, August 16, from 10AM - 2PM at Zilker Elementary School. You can read more about it over at Craftzine.com and get all the details on the Future Craft Collective Web site.

I am beyond thrilled to be teaming up with the rockin' Jennifer Perkins of Naughty Secretary Club to celebrate the release of her new book, Naughty Secretary Club: The Working Girls Guide to Handmade Jewelry. Mark your calendars for August 30 from 3-6 PM, 'cause we'll be hosting a blow out craftabulous event at Craft-O-Rama. It's like a crafty double-header. Remember how much fun the Craft07 Release Party was? Now take that and toss in the coolest kitsch jewelry gal celebrating her rad new book and you can imagine that this even will be off the hizook.

Did I just type "hizook?" I can't help it, I'm that excited. Stay tuned to the blog for more information as we get closer to the event.

Sakes alive! That was a blast!

Boy howdy! The CRAFT Magazine Release Party today was a blast! I was floored by how many people showed up (well over 100) and seeing so many people giddily crafting just made my heart swell. Everything flowed so well. The Work*Shop was the absolute perfect spot for the event. Even the kids had their own area and crafted happily while parents made our button bracelet project.


I met a ton of folks with whom I've only emailed, I got to see friends whom I don't get to see nearly enough and I got to give away loads of crazy amazing door prizes to happy folks. One of my proudest moments, though, was seeing my dad stitching up a button bracelet! My mom and dad are the best people on the planet (I love them dearly) and they were so sweet to stop by today. I introduced my mom to Jenny Hart, and they got to chat about embroidery and Mah Jongg. It was so cool.


We were also lucky to have had reps from CRAFT and Maker Faire in attendance. They were in Austin for Maker Faire planning and a Maker Faire Town Hall meeting and were able to come to the event. I'm hoping we knocked their socks off! They brought great door prizes - including a box set of the first year of CRAFT. They were the most coveted door prizes of the afternoon.

Here's one quick timely tidbit: Knitting guru, Vickie Howell, was at the party today and announced that she's just signed on as the knitting editor for Craft Gossip. She's looking to fill five posts a week with knitting news, and wants to hear from you if you've got knitting patterns, projects or books to promote. You can email her at gossip at vickiehowell dot com to send ideas. She also has a new web video series starting on Lifetime TV's web site tomorrow. Her first project will be a Fourth of July-themed felted blanket - a great project for knitters and non-knitters alike! Be sure to check it out.

The most fabulous Leslie Bonnell - my mentor and crafty partner in crime. Anyone who knows Leslie knows that in addition to being the most patient sewing instructor on the planet, she's also incredibly generous, supportive and just darn fun. There's no way this party could have gone down without her help. Leslie, I love you. :)

Thanks to my awesome husband who hung with the kids all day so I could gallivant with the Crafty Goodness, and thanks to my parents who are the most fabulous people you could ever hope to know. Having my parents at the event was a blast. My dad knows the whip stitch now! (That's him pictured above with my mom in the background in her sassy black and white skirt and white shirt)

These gals are doing really amazing things with their projects, and I highly recommend checking them out. I'm constantly floored by the incredibly creative and progressive things that are going on in Austin. I love it.

We made awesome button bracelets, munched on goodies and let the kids craft themselves crazy. Pretty much the most perfect afternoon ever.

My name tag! Leslie had the brilliant idea to print our name tags on fabric and stitch them up nicely. My stitching isn't generally this wonky, but the felt is the stiff kind, and it was kind of tricky to stitch on.

Countdown to CRAFT Release Party

Yeah, yeah, so I promised a post a day this week. Whew-boy. Two kids, two jobs, two dogs (one of which we discovered needs an $800 heatworm treatment this week - oy!) and doing the actual planning for this event has left me a tad breathless ... and blogless! But things are coming together so well, and it's going to be so.much.fun.

CRAFT Magazine - the reason we are celebrating this weekend

All this fun stuff I've been talking about this week is fine and good, but the core of why we are having this awesome party is the fabulous CRAFT Magazine! I've actually been working on a week-long series about several different craft magazines, and CRAFT is at the top of that list. The CRAFT folks have established themselves as the authority on the DIY movement, and have done a spectacular job at building and supporting the crafting community.

All of my friends who have CRAFT subscriptions talk about receiving their quarterly mag in the same way. They get that kind of glassy eye look, and describe - in detail - their reading ritual. I'm no better. The minute I see the magazine in my mailbox, I get all giddy. As soon as I get back to the house, I tear it open and scan through every single page, making mental notes of things I want to go back and check out. After the initial scan, the magazine usually luxuriates on my nightstand, offering up fun reading material for weeks. Once I've fully read it cover-to-cover (and if I'm not immediately doing a project from the issue) it hits my bookshelf, along with all my other issues (I have all but the first one!)

I'm going to go ahead and reveal my complete and utter geeky-ness here by admitting that I look at them all in a line on my shelf much the same way I've admired bookshelves lined with the yellow spines of National Geographic. Sure, there are only 7 issues, but still - I hold them in that regard.

And why not? They are filled with inspiration, fun, and - most importantly - things that I just love and that make me happy. You can't get much better than that.

I also love being able to see articles written by people I know and admire. One of my most hilarious magazine moments was when I opened the Play issue and recognized Diane's thumbs in her Otedama tutorial before I even read her byline. Clearly, I've read waaaaay to many of her wonderful tutorials. :)

I finally treated myself to a subscription to CRAFT last fall at Maker Faire. They were having specials on subscriptions and I jumped on it. I was so glad I did. Not only did I get a great deal on the subscription, but I got to take a free issue home with me that day - so it was like a double bonus. Five issues for the price of discounted four! Score!

A little more about our CRAFT Release Party venue - The Work*Shop

Just over three years ago, I started hearing about The Work*Shop - a walk-in craft shop here in Austin. At the time, I had a newborn baby, and was kind of new to Austin, so it took me a while to get over there. But when I did ... ooooohhh lordy. I fell deeply in love. Not just with the place - with wall-to-wall crafty opportunities - but with the owners, Cindy and Lisa. I attended classes, did some paint-your-own-pottery, and even got to see Leah Kramer of Craftster.org there once. It's also the place where I first met Jenny Hart of Sublime Stitching and took an embroidery class from her.

So when I first got word that I'd be hosting the first-ever Austin CRAFT Magazine Release Party, I knew there was no where else in town we could hold the event. Late last year, The Work*Shop moved locations from 6th Street to Anderson Lane, just next to one of Austin's most awesome toy stores, Terra Toys. The space is amazing. It's huge, open and inviting. There are loads of tables, great separation of craft areas, a great party area, and a fantastic consignment boutique of Austin handmade goods.

It's dreamy.

The Work*Shop is a great place to get your craft on - especially if you are with a group of friends who each want to do something different. You can paint your own pottery, do mosaics, make jewelry, decoupage, make bath products and more. They offer fun classes and workshops, and several craft groups meet there on a regular basis. The folks who work there are loads of fun, too.


On Sunday, we'll be using the party area for our main craft project set up. We'll have a special table full of Sublime Stitching goodies (including Jenny Hart!) up in the boutique area, and we'll have some snacks at the back of the shop. We'll even have one table set up with some random crafty bits that the kiddos can play with. And even with all that, there will still be plenty of tables and space for folks to partake in any of the crafts The Work*Shop has to offer.

In fact, Lisa has generously offered a 15% discount on any of the crafts in the Work*Shop for folks who are coming to the Release Party. So you can do our project from the magazine, mingle with some crafty celebs, munch on some treats, entertain the kids, and make some additional awesome crafts at a discount.

Seriously, all this goodness is making me a bit giddy.

A little more about the CRAFT release party

Things are really coming together - even in such a short time period - for the CRAFT release party. I'll be revealing a tidbit or two each day on what we'll have going on. Yesterday, Leslie made the first sample of the craft we'll be making (adorable! and wearable!) and last night I met with Lisa from the Work*Shop to make more plans for the event (loads of fun!). Our conversation didn't last as long as I would have liked, though, because I was slammed with a raging ear infection. What am I? Three years old? I mean, that's how old I was the last time I had one of these suckers. With some antibiotics, pain medicine and a marathon nap today, I'm feeling a little better.
